Lai Wai Fong

Lai Wai Fong is a Partner at Shearn Delamore & Co., specializing in Dispute Resolution. She has extensive experience in corporate and commercial disputes, insurance disputes, tort, aviation disputes, and land litigation, and appears regularly in the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Federal Court as counsel for trials and appeals.

Wai Fong has been involved in a number of complex and high‑profile matters. She acted for the Administrator of Malaysia Airlines in claims arising from the MH370 and MH17 incidents. She was lead counsel in the landmark Federal Court decision in JW Properties Sdn Bhd v Pentadbir Tanah Daerah Kuala Selangor, which clarified the retrospective effect of the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Act 2016. She also led the first Islamic bond litigation in Malaysia, Pesaka Astana (M) Sdn Bhd, involving the issuance of RM140 million 'Al‑Bai Bithaman Ajil' bonds. She acted for Johor Corporation on the judicial review arising from the compulsory acquisition of land for the Muar Timber Industrial Park, and was involved in the judicial review concerning the compulsory acquisition of the Ampang Park Shopping Centre for the MRT Line 2 project. She also acted as lead counsel in a substantial arbitration claim for a government‑linked conglomerate arising from a groundwater resources development project.

She holds an LL.B. from the University of London (1998), where she was awarded the Book Prize for Constitutional Law, and completed the Certificate of Legal Practice in 1999, receiving the Book Prize for the Law of Evidence. She was admitted to the Malaysian Bar in 2000 and has been a Partner since 2010. She has been an Advocacy Trainer since 2016 and currently serves as Deputy Chair of the Advocacy Training Committee of the Malaysian Bar.
