Zainal holds an LL.B (Hons) from the University of London (School of Oriental and African Studies, 1989) and an LL.M from King's College, University of London (1992). He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1990, admitted as a Barrister‑at‑Law of the Honourable Society of Gray's Inn, and called to the Malaysian Bar in 1991. He is an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.
